Acting President receives Foreign Minister of Estonia

2004.04.23

Vilnius, April 23rd. Acting President Arturas Paulauskas of the Republic of Lithuania received today Foreign Minister Kristiina Ojuland of the Republic of Estonia.

For services to the cause of integration of Lithuania into the European Union, the acting President of Lithuania conferred on the Estonian Foreign Minister the Grand Cross of Commander of the Order of Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas.

“It gives me a particular pleasure to award you at this important time, when Lithuania and Estonia have finally reached their strategic goal of joining as full-fledged members the European Union and NATO,” acting President Arturas Paulauskas said.

The issues discussed during the meeting included, inter alia, the bilateral relations between Lithuania and Estonia, the perspective of regional co-operation within the Baltic Sea area, the activities of the Baltic Assembly and matters related to the membership of the EU and NATO.

Acting President Arturas Paulauskas expressed hope that political, economic and cultural relations between the two states will acquire more weight and accelerate after Lithuania and Estonia join the Euro-Atlantic structures. He also supported the view expressed by Estonian Foreign Minister that co-operation among the states of the Baltic Sea region should be further strengthened.

The acting President shared his impressions from his visit to Ukraine. In this context he expressed hope that Estonia, like Lithuania, will support the development of democratic processes in Ukraine and other neighbouring countries in the East.

“Having pooled their efforts, the Baltic states would be able to achieve greater effectiveness in their relations with neighbouring countries in the East,” acting President Arturas Paulauskas said.

He further underlined that the Baltic countries in the EU could get engaged in more active consultations on the adjustment of their positions concerning voting for candidatures to various posts in international organisations.
