Vilnius, June 21st. Acting President Arturas Paulauskas of the Republic of Lithuania received today the letters of credence from Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Romania to Lithuania, Ioan Petru Cordos.
“It is gratifying that we are stepping up the bilateral co-operation between our countries. Regular political contacts, the growing turnover of bilateral trade and tourism all serve as a good basis for further development of our relationship,” said the Acting President at the ceremony.
Acting President Paulauskas thanked the Ambassador for the wishes conveyed from President Ion Iliescu of Romania.
Lithuania and Romania have achieved their major foreign policy goal, NATO membership, which allows for a more effective participation in promoting security and stability, the Acting President underlined.
“Lithuania strongly supports the integration of Romania with the European Union,” Mr. Paulauskas said.
“Lithuania and Romania have a history as allies: together we defended our freedom and democracy and built bridges to NATO and the European Union. It is my firm belief that we shall remain allies in a Europe, united, strong, secure and prosperous,” underscored the Acting President.
Mr. Paulauskas welcomed the abolishment of the visa regime between Lithuania and Romania, saying it will help to promote tourism, step up the bilateral economic co-operation and further develop the Lithuanian-Romanian relationship in different fields.
The Acting President expressed belief that Ambassador Ioan Petru Cordos will significantly contribute to the development of a friendly relationship between the two countries.
