Istanbul, June 28th. Acting President Artūras Paulauskas of the Republic of Lithuania addressed NATOs North Atlantic Council (NAC) on important issues of NATOs effectiveness and credibility.
Acting President Artūras Paulauskas focused on the post-conflict situation in Afghanistan, emphasising the need for the governments of the NATO member states to show convincingly their commitment to building a stable, peaceful and free Afghanistan.
He also informed NAC about ongoing improvement of Lithuanias defence capabilities in order to be able better to contribute to the strength of the Alliance and targeted use of deployable forces.
The Acting President of Lithuania called on NATO to step up its co-operation with the European Union and remarked that Lithuania, which is a member of both these organisations, was disappointed by the unnecessary duplication of capabilities.
In his closing remarks, the Acting President underlined that the Alliance should be more forthcoming in its political and practical support for the Euro-Atlantic integration efforts of Ukraine and should give it a clear perspective of membership.
